Event Details
The Bernal Hill Players is an adventurous San Francisco chamber music group specializing in eclectic programs and world premieres. For their 2012-13 season core members Martha Rodríguez-Salazar (flute/voice), Leah di Tullio (clarinet) and Jennifer Peringer (piano/percussion) will be joined by special guest Jessica Ivry (cello).
On Saturday, October 27, 8–10pm, they will present two world premieres by Mexican composers Guillermo Galindo and Eduardo Gamboa inspired by neighborhoods of Mexico City. The program also includes other gems of Latin American chamber music repertoire, including Zarabandeo by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, La Muerte del Ángel by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, Cuarteto by the Cuban-American composer Joaquín Nin-Culmell, Choros No. 2 by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, and favorites of the folk and popular literature, La Llorona and Granada.
Admission is $10 in advance, or $15 at the door while tickets last. Guests may arrive early to visit the exhibition Calling on the Spirits to Face the Future: Dia de los Muertos 2012; exhibition hours have been extended to 7:30pm.
This program of is made possible through the Musical Grant Program, which is administered by the San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music, and supported by Heller Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation and San Francisco Grants for the Arts; and partially funded by Zellerbach Family Foundation.
PERFORMER BIOGRAPHIES
Martha Rodríguez-Salazar came to the United States in 1998 to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Music at Mills College in Oakland after a successful performing career as both flutist and mezzo-soprano in Mexico. She currently teaches flute, voice, and Latin American vocal ensembles at the Community Music Center. For the past seven years, she has performed regularly with BACH (Bay Area Classical Harmonies), and studied in New York with Kalmen Opperman.
Jennifer Peringer spent her childhood studying classical piano, then explored a broad range of other styles and instruments as a young adult.
